Do you remember “Innerspace” (“Aventure Interieure”, “Die reise ins Ich”) ? If you were a child in 1987, it may have been one of the things that hooked you to Science! It was a movie about a man who was miniaturized for the purpose of a scientific experiment and injected into a human body (when it was supposed to be a rabbit). And you could follow him during his fantastic biological journey! (Nostalgic? here is the trailer!). Or maybe you remember more the “Fantastic Voyage”, a 1966 movie on a very similar topic.

CORPUS, a new museum that opened its doors three weeks ago in the Netherlands, allows you to experiment this trip not sited down in front of your TV, but walking around inside a giant human body! Here is a photogalery of the museum.

It sounds so great! If you happen to go there, let us know how it was! And for those who can’t make it, you may be happy to know that a remake of the Fantastic voyage is underway by Roland Emmerich, the director of Godzilla and the Day after Tomorrow. It sounds like it will not lack special effects!

Sand dollar’s survival technique

A marine life secret has just been revealed. The small marine animals named Sand Dollars seem to have a very special way to escape a predator: cloning themselves. The Sand dollar appears to be able to feel the presence of a predator and then to launch the cloning process. The two new Sand dollars resulting from it are a bit smaller than the initial animal, which could make them less easily detectable. Read more on ScienceDaily.

Do you know Phytophthora infestans? This fungus-like pathogen (classified as an oomycete) that causes the plant disease called ‘Late Blight’? The Late Blight is a very dangerous plant disease which deeply impacted History; it was responsible for the terrible Irish Potato Famine in the middle of the 19th century. Likely because of climate change, Phytophthora infestans is attacking potato crops in Peru. Watch this beautiful audio-reportage from NPR to learn more about the effects the disease would have on this homeland of potatoes

Hello Science lovers or curious!

I am Oreli and I used to be at the bench for several years. I’ve just packed away pipettes, test-tubes and lab coat! But I don’t close the door of the laboratory. Science is everywhere, and so inspiring! I want to write about it! So here I am, trying to become a science writer and entering the Blogosphere for the first time.

I’ll speak about health, nanotechnologies, plants, and much more! In addition to these stories, there will be three special categories. “Check this out!” will be about books, documentaries, movies, or exhibits that are directly about Science. “Fictions with science” will be dedicated to movies, TV shows or books in which science is part of the scenario. “Hands-on!” will give tips and links for those who want to practice!

I hope I’ll get you interested in my little glimpse!
